San Alfonso Mourns the Passing of Brother Bernie

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that our dear “Brother Bernie” died unexpectedly today, June 9 th , in Towson, Maryland. Brother Bernie had been living in our Saint John Neumann Residence at Stella Maris in Timonium since August 2019 after having ministered here at San Alfonso for over 34 of his 67 years as a religious brother.

Bernie’s goodness and kindness to us as our confrere, friend, and colleague in ministry were a great blessing to our Redemptorist Community here and throughout our Congregation. In his ministry at San Alfonso, Brother Bernie

deeply touched the hearts of countless retreatants by his warm and gracious welcome and by his generous and dedicated spirit of service. He loved the beauty of the ocean setting at San Alfonso and loved his ministry to the people of God who came to pray and to take some rest here.

We mourn his passing but praise and thank God for the gift of our Brother Bernie’s life and ministry. A humble, quiet man of prayer, he was a good and gracious soul, ever grateful for the blessings of his faith, his family, his friends, and his life and ministry as a Redemptorist. May our Brother Bernie, God’s ‘good and faithful servant,’ rest now in peace with Jesus, Our Mother of Perpetual Help, and all the Saints in glory.

We will look forward to celebrating Brother Bernie’s life here at San Alfonso at some future date when health guidelines allow us to fittingly come together in joyful remembrance of him. God bless and best to all!
